10 fluorescent miles

Time for a marathon pacing session, and it all went very wrong. But in a good way. I went too fast! Ten miles on the road, in the dark. To get myself hill ready, I climbed 5 miles and 300 foot to the top of Shotover and back home again. Averaged 7:20 pace for the whole run, way off the 8 minute miling which I want for the marathon (= 3:30 flat marathon target time). I guess it’s good news, but the whole point was to try and get my body to recognise the correct pace so I don’t set off too fast or too slow. Last year I had a handy Dutchman with a balloon who guided me all the way to the finish, so I really didn’t have to worry about judging my pace. This year it’ll be too tempting to go slowly in fear of the dreadful hill at mile 22 in Snowdonia.
I’ve just been told there’s a pub at the start of that hill at Waunfawr, so there’s a plan afoot to get a swift half pint in before tackling that last monster.
