I heard this last night in our garden, it only stopped when I went out with a torch. We see them around quite regularly, and have even seen a trio of stag, doe and fawn together. They love windfall apples.

What a fantastic idea that is - and I'll add the link on your behalf here: http://walk2012.co.uk/blog/
By complete coincidence I'm organising a 180 mile running relay on April 14-17th this year too! http://www.burntorun.org.uk and it's along the Grand Union Canal - are you going that way in London?
I'm not at all ready to run the whole way this year, but one of our relay runners actually won the Ridgeway race last year.

Wow, I haven't even walked the whole ridgeway yet, let alone run it! Reckon you could do it in one go with enough training.

We are planning to do a 180-mile walk to coincide with the Olympics, but I couldn't run it!

Thanks canute :-)
Yes, it's interesting that despite the less strenuous running workouts my legs stood up to the hillier route much much better than they did in the spring at Stratford. Again, it's hard to tell whether this earlier leg collapse may have had something to do with the higher temperatures on the day in April, or the Furman training with low cross-training (or low iron?).
I have a suspicion that the slower 20 milers were actually better for me, as I was out on my feet for longer. In particular, the 23 miler took 3:10, so I'd been on my feet for as long as the marathon itself. In the spring round of Furman training, using their faster paces, my longest run was 22 miles in 2:46.
I think if I use Furman again, for best results I'd combine the high biking mileage with the faster paces, but this would have to be during the summer, the only time I enjoy cycling really. For the 20 milers, I'd make sure I added at least one run which lasted as long as the predicted marathon time.

Well done on achieving a PB despite injury in the summer (with the adversity compounded by an unintended fast start and an upset gut around halfway). I was intrigued to note that in your preparation you had relaxed the demands of the intense sessions in the Furman program but you had done a much larger volume of cross training on the bike this time. My concern about relying on a large volume of cycling is the risk that the legs might not be adequately conditioned for the sustained pounding of a marathon – but that did not appear to be a problem for you – it appears that the five 20 mile runs were enough to prepare the legs for the task.

Hi Xavier,
sorry, I've been shocking in keeping this blog up to date - I'll do that now. It would be great to meet up, but I am in the end going to try and run a small PB, as training has ended up going quite well this summer. I might well end up falling back of course, and it will be good to know I can receive some companionship if I do! But if all goes to plan, we must toast completion of the marathon in the Grand Place.

Hi Alun,
How is it looking for Brussels ? If you would like to, we can run together at a steady pace.... I will not attempt a PB as my training over the summer has not been optimal (another story, for another day) and I'm running in Athens later in the month. So if cruising round in about 4 hours and gossiping all the way tempts you..... Just give me a shout!
Best wishes, Xavier

Great to finally meet you too! I'm hanging fire at the moment, but will probably get them from Pinknoise http://bit.ly/3GMgFs - they sell the set (2 x DPA, XLR adaptors, and other odds and ends) for £650. Seems the best price right now.
I'm just now listening to Chris' 'Cima Verde' on Spotify - lots of owl sounds for you!
